Dumbwaiters are designed for smaller loads (maximum capacity under ASME 17.1 is 750 lb or 340 kg) in compact spaces such as retail and restaurant applications, material lifts handle larger and heavier items (maximum capacity under ASME 17.1 is 2500 lb  or 1134 kg), and VRCs are used primarily in industrial or restricted-access environments with higher capacity need and are governed by ASME B20.1. VRCs cannot be used in an area accessible to the general public.

These systems should be considered early in the design phase, as shaftway size, pit depth, overhead clearance, and drive placement can affect structural layout, fire ratings, and overall space planning.

The decision depends on what is being moved, how it will be loaded, and where it is traveling. Smaller hand-loaded items like food and beverage, retail stock and medical supplies typically suit dumbwaiters, while heavier carts, pallets, or industrial loads may require a material lift or VRC.

Dumbwaiters and material lifts can be used in commercial buildings with proper fire-rated enclosures, but VRCs must be located in restricted-access areas and cannot be exposed to the general public.

Dumbwaiters and material lifts fall under ASME A17.1 and CSA B-44 while VRCs are governed by ASME B20.1. Code selection affects enclosure requirements, access control, and how the system can be integrated into the building.

They typically require significantly less space than a freight elevator, however,  exact requirements depend on platform size, loading style, drive type, and travel height. These systems come in a wide variety of car sizes and configurations to suit the load, application and building footprint.
